What Types of RVs Can Be Insured

Class A Motorhomes

These large recreational vehicles usually require substantial coverage. Policies typically include higher third-party liability limits and robust comprehensive protection to safeguard your significant investment from road hazards and physical damage.

Class B Camper Vans

Smaller camper vans serve as both a primary driver and a living space. Insurance policies address both automotive risks and the personal property stored inside.

Class C Motorhomes

These vehicles are typically built on a standard truck or van chassis. These mid-sized motorhomes require a balanced insurance policy covering mechanical collisions alongside standard residential liabilities for the living quarters.

Travel Trailers

Since these are towed rather than driven, trailer insurance primarily focuses on comprehensive risks, structural damage, and liability protection while unhitched at your campsite.

Fifth Wheels

These specialized towables attach via a truck-bed hitch. Policies protect against the structural and transport risks associated with larger, heavier fifth-wheel trailers.

Tent Trailers

Light and collapsible, tent trailers are highly susceptible to severe weather and theft. Coverage protects your tent trailer against sudden physical losses.

Toy Haulers

Designed to transport heavy equipment such as ATVs or motorcycles. Insurance coverage for these typically focuses on physical damage coverage and the valuable cargo inside.

Do You Need Recreational Vehicle Insurance with ICBC in BC

In British Columbia, the law dictates how your RV must be insured based on its vehicle type. If you own a motorized RV, such as a Class A, B, or C motorhome, it is legally classified as a motor vehicle. Consequently, you must register it with ICBC and carry mandatory ICBC Basic Autoplan insurance to operate it on public roads. For pull-behind towables like travel trailers or fifth wheels, an active ICBC license plate is required for transport. To enhance your safety, Goldleaf Insurance can bundle your foundational ICBC coverage with specialized private policies.

ICBC Basic Autoplan

RV insurance options - Goldleaf Auto Insurance Surrey

Make sure you're covered where it counts. The ICBC Basic Autoplan is a mandatory level of coverage for BC drivers as required by law. Under BC’s care-based insurance model, here’s what it includes:

  • Enhanced Accident Benefits: If you and/or your passengers are injured in an auto collision, you have access to medical care and recovery benefits with no overall limit, regardless of who is at fault. This also covers wage loss replacement up to 90% of your net income (up to a gross annual limit of $122,500).
  • Basic Vehicle Damage Coverage (BVDC): If you are not responsible (not at fault) for a crash in B.C., your own Basic insurance covers your vehicle repairs up to $200,000.
  • Third-Party Liability: Provides up to $200,000 of coverage. Under Enhanced Care, law prevents most lawsuits for vehicle damage and injuries. Therefore, this coverage is primarily used for non-vehicle property damage, or when driving your RV outside of B.C. where lawsuits are still permitted.
  • Underinsured Motorist Protection: Provides up to $1 million in coverage per person in rare circumstances where you or your household members are injured but are not eligible for Enhanced Accident Benefits, and the at-fault driver has insufficient coverage.
  • Hit and Run Protection: Provides B.C. residents with up to $200,000 of coverage for non-vehicle property damage (such as campsite contents) caused by an unidentified driver. *(Vehicle damage is covered if you carry optional Collision or optional Hit and Run coverage).*
  • Inverse Liability: Covers vehicle damage up to 100% (to the extent you are not responsible) when driving in parts of Canada or the U.S. where local laws prohibit you from claiming against the at-fault driver.

Optional Coverage

Increase your level of protection with ICBC’s Optional Autoplan or private specialty extensions. Here are some of the options available to protect you and your vehicle throughout Surrey, BC:

  • Loss of Use
  • Extended Third-Party Liability Coverage (Up to $5 million)
  • At-Fault Collision (Crucial for protecting your own RV investment if you are at fault)
  • New Vehicle Protection
  • Specific Perils Coverage
  • Comprehensive
  • Rental Vehicle Coverage
  • Income Top-Up Coverage (If your gross income exceeds $122,500/year)

How Much Does RV Insurance Cost?

The cost of RV or motorhome insurance in British Columbia varies significantly depending on several factors, optional coverages, and private add-ons. Insurance underwriters evaluate the total replacement value, age, make, and model of your RV to determine risk. Motorized RVs generally carry higher premiums than towables due to engine components and liability risks. Additionally, your personal driving history, claims record, and how often you use the vehicle whether seasonally or as a full-time residence impact your rate. Keeping your RV in a secure storage facility or installing safety devices can help lower your annual premiums.

Common RV and Motorhome Insurance Claims in British Columbia

British Columbia's climate and terrain can present distinct risks for RV owners. Depending on where you reside or travel to in BC, windstorms and falling tree branches can cause structural damage to roofs and awnings at local campsites. Additionally, highway driving through forested areas increases the likelihood of animal collisions and windshield damage from flying rocks. Theft and vandalism remain prevalent concerns, particularly when RVs are left unattended in remote areas or parked in seasonal storage blocks during the winter. Finally, internal electrical fires and localized water damage from plumbing leaks comprise a large percentage of annual provincial claims.
